I’m excited to offer you the chance to own a unique piece of my art.
I was recently inspired by a picture of the Springbok rugby captain, Siya Kolisi, leading his team into battle against arch-rivals, the All Blacks. On seeing it, I had an inexplicable desire to capture the passion and courage required when facing daunting challenges. This drawing, ‘Siya and the Spearing of Darkness’ being the result.
The success story of the Springboks is more than just a sports victory - in a way it reflects the story of our nation. The Bok’s journey has sparked countless social media posts on leadership, teamwork, humility, and sacrifice, however, beneath the spotlight on success lies a deeper treasure: the significance found in enduring life’s highs and lows. As Kipling put it, “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same… you will be a man, my son.”
This quote speaks to me because despite the Springboks’ triumphs, Siya’s own global achievements and personal challenges, these moments are transient. The real value lies in the character we allow to be shaped through it all - kindness, respect, perseverance and humility. These are enduring. That’s what this piece is about: contesting for the hope, the light, that lies beyond the darkness.
